Quality Measures for Colorectal Surgery
The Colorectal Cancer Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center continually measures the quality of care given to patients having colon and rectal surgery.
The quality measures monitored include:
- The volume of colorectal surgical procedures done.
- The length of a patient's stay in the hospital.
- The number of minimally invasive (laparoscopic) procedures done.
- The percentage of colorectal surgeries that result in a patient needing a colostomy, an opening from abdomen to the outside of the body to allow the contents of the colon to empty into a bag.
In addition, a number of other quality of care measures are reported on a hospital-wide basis. These include measures of:
- Nursing care
- Prevention of hospital-acquired infections
- Surgical care, including prevention of surgical infections and blood clots
