Fatty Liver Program
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is the most common liver disease in the U.S., affecting as much as 25% of the population. The Cedars-Sinai Fatty Liver Program provides advanced diagnosis, treatment and ongoing research to protect your liver and your health.

What Is Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease?
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) happens when there is a buildup of fat in the liver, often due to excess weight. Too much fat in the liver can lead to inflammation, swelling and damage (a condition called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis or NASH). NAFLD can result in cirrhosis, or scarring of the liver, which can be life-threatening. However, with proper treatment, you can relieve symptoms and avoid complications.

S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe)
While there are currently no medications for NAFLD or NASH, we are testing the effects of S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe). SAMe is a natural compound found in our bodies, and it may play a role in reducing liver inflammation that results from these conditions.
Microbiome
We are studying the role of microbiome in NAFLD and NASH. Microbiome include bacteria and fungi that are eliminated by the stool.
