Thyroid Surgery

If you received a diagnosis of thyroid cancer or another thyroid condition, the team at Cedars-Sinai is here for you. We will discuss your treatment options in detail, including surgery, so you are prepared for the next steps in your care.

Why Thyroid Surgery?

Shaped like a butterfly, the thyroid gland in your throat helps your body control how it uses energy (metabolism). The thyroid produces chemicals called hormones that regulate your metabolism, brain development and the function of the heart, digestive tract and muscles.

Many thyroid disorders respond well to medical therapy. However, if medical therapy isn't helping manage a condition, or if the condition has progressed, it may be time to explore surgery. For people with thyroid cancer, surgery is typically the primary treatment.

Thyroid Conditions We Treat Surgically

We work with experts in endocrinology, oncology, radiology and pathology to create personalized treatments before and after surgery. We typically recommend surgery to treat conditions such as:

Thyroid Surgery We Perform at Cedars-Sinai

Our team offers several surgical procedures to diagnose and treat thyroid conditions, including advanced scarless thyroidectomies and lymph node dissection.

Thyroidectomy

To remove all or part of the thyroid, our surgeons offer several procedures. We discuss with you which procedure is best for your situation. Surgeries include:

  • Conventional thyroidectomy: For large tumors, open surgery may be the best option to remove the mass completely. We make a small incision in the neck over the thyroid to remove the tumor.
  • Scarless thyroidectomy: We insert tiny surgical instruments through the inner lip or breast in order to reach the thyroid. This procedure results in little to no visible scarring.

Lymph Node Dissection

Lymph nodes are found throughout the body as part of the lymphatic system, which fights infections. If lymph nodes in the neck become enlarged, we may perform a dissection to check for or remove cancer.
