Preventive & Rehabilitative Cardiac Center Patient Guide

The Preventive and Rehabilitative Cardiac Center at the Smidt Heart Institute is your solution for maintaining a healthy heart and lifestyle after a diagnosis of a heart condition. Its dedicated staff of cardiac physicians, exercise physiologists, nutritionists, registered nurses and psychologists offers cardiac rehabilitation regimens that provide education on diet, exercise and lifestyle adjustments.

Outpatient programs are individualized and comprehensive, designed with the goals of reducing heart disease risk and improving quality and quantity of life. The programs consist of:

  • Emotional and psychosocial support to cope with lifestyle changes associated with heart surgery or diagnosis of a heart condition
  • Lifestyle education to reduce the risk of future heart conditions
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Physician- and telemetry-monitored exercise training and education

Enrollment

Any person who has experienced a heart attack or undergone angioplasty, bypass surgery, a heart transplant or valve surgery is eligible for the Preventive and Rehabilitative Cardiac Center’s program. Any patient recently diagnosed with new-onset chest pain or congestive heart failure (specific criteria apply) is also eligible.

Participants have access to individualized, physician-monitored, one-hour exercise sessions two to three times a week. Sessions include nutrition and education as well as monitored workouts on safe exercise equipment. Exercise hours will be discussed and determined at your initial visit.
