MRI With Anesthesia

Please read both sections below. There are tests that must be done well in advance of your exam, as well as eating and drinking instructions to be followed in the hours before your exam.

Exams Required Before MRI With Anesthesia

Adults less than 45 years of age

  • History and physical done within 30 days before exam
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG) done within six months if the patient has a cardiac condition
  • A chest X-ray within six months if the patient has a pulmonary condition

Adults over 45 years of age

  • History and physical done within 30 days before exam
  • CBC done within six months of date of exam
  • EKG done within six months of date of exam
  • A chest X-ray within six months if the patient has a pulmonary condition

For pediatric patients

  • History and physical done within 30 days before exam
  • EKG done within six months if the patient has a cardiac condition
  • Chest X-ray within six months if the patient has a pulmonary condition

Eating and Drinking Instructions

For adults

  • Please do not eat solid food for eight hours before your exam.
  • Please do not eat or drink anything for six hours before your MRI.

For pediatric patients

  • Please do not give your child solid food for eight hours before MRI.
  • Please do not give formula, cow or soy milk for six hours before MRI.
  • Please do not give your child breast milk for four hours before MRI.
  • Please do not give your child clear liquids or water for up to two hours before the exam (Pedialyte, clear broth, apple juice, water and D5W are considered clear liquids).
