For an estimated 1-5% of patients diagnosed with COPD, the root cause may be the lack of a protein called alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) in the blood. This genetic condition makes it harder for the body to protect the lungs and other organs from the harmful effects of inflammation.

The AAT Deficiency Program at Cedars-Sinai is working to learn more about this inherited disease and ensure that patients with COPD are tested for it.

Researchers and doctors at Cedars-Sinai have pioneered medical advances in testing and treatments for lung diseases, leading to better patient outcomes. Learn more about our current pulmonary research.

Cedars-Sinai offers many options for graduate studies, continuing medical education and professional development for pulmonary and respiratory specialties.
