Center for Outpatient Hip and Knee Surgery
If you're in need of a knee or hip replacement but want to avoid the hassle of a hospital stay, that's now a reality at Cedars-Sinai. Outpatient joint replacement surgery is safe and effective, so you can spend the majority of your recovery in your own home. We perform minimally invasive orthopaedic surgery at our Outpatient Hip and Knee Center, allowing you access to a full array of medical care and support outside of the main hospital.
What is Outpatient Joint Replacement?
Outpatient joint replacement is an option that allows you to return home the day of surgery or the next morning. Designed to deliver the best results of surgical care while offering an accelerated recovery, the practice avoids hospital admission and keeps patients in a healthcare setting for the shortest amount of time. Due to improvements in surgical techniques, anesthesia and pain management, outpatient joint replacement is a a common practice across the country at top joint replacement programs.
We offer the surgery for preapproved, medically fit adults who our medical team expects to be discharged in less than 23 hours. Patients with more extensive inpatient rehabilitation needs, such as those with significant health conditions including cardiovascular disease, may require a longer inpatient hospital stay for closer postoperative monitoring and rehabilitation. Those interested in the inpatient procedure can explore our traditional Joint Replacement Program.
What Can I Expect?
Patients undergo surgery in the Advanced Health Sciences Pavilion, with post-surgical recovery at our new Outpatient Stay Unit on the fifth floor. Our multidisciplinary team includes surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, physical therapists and occupational therapists who guide patients through the full perioperative process from start to finish. They assist with pain control, medication and fluid management, blood flow and blood clot prevention and physical therapy.
How quickly will I recover?
Nurses will usually have you out of bed and walking with their help within a few hours of surgery. We offer same-day and next-day discharge. Our team will make sure you have the equipment you will need once you discharge home, such as walkers and canes. We will also help you coordinate home health support if required.
With Cedars-Sinai, you can receive elective total hip and knee and partial knee replacements on an outpatient basis through our ambulatory care center, steering clear of the main hospital entirely but with its additional support and advantages nearby if needed. We aim to reinforce your early recovery—allowing for a smooth transition to at-home care and, ultimately, full mobility.
Surgeons at our brand-new facility have all the tools on hand to deliver first-class orthopaedic care. Through minimally invasive techniques and utilization of advanced technology, we are able to offer patients the highest level of satisfaction with their joint replacement procedures. Additionally, we have robotic- and computer assisted-technology available to improve our accuracy with joint replacement surgery.
Our outpatient procedures prioritize safety, minimizing complications and improving recovery. Avoiding hospital admission and an accelerated discharge can lower risk of infection. Coupled with specialized nursing care and therapy, we can help avoid potential complications and readmission.
