Hyperhidrosis FAQ
If you're considering surgery to reduce excessive sweating, you probably have questions. We can provide answers to many of the frequently asked questions about hyperhidrosis surgery.
We can perform video-assisted surgery on almost everyone. However, there are a few exceptions. If you have a history of severe cardio-respiratory disease, pleural disease or untreated thyroid disease, we may not perform surgery. You may also be ineligible if you've had certain infections or surgeries that prevent us from reaching the necessary nerves in your spine.
We typically perform the procedure on an outpatient basis. Though we do use general anesthesia, your surgery will take only 30-45 minutes.
Risks for video-assisted hyperhidrosis surgery are limited. However, as with any surgery, there is a risk of infection, injury to surrounding tissue or excessive bleeding.
Some people may experience mild to moderate sweating on the back, abdomen, thighs or legs. Rarely, people may feel an increase in sweating while eating or may have a droopy eye (Horner syndrome). Please reach out to our team with any questions you have about possible side effects.
We are proud of our high success rate for this procedure. Every person responds differently to surgery, so outcomes can vary.
The chances of your symptoms returning are very low. Surgery is often a permanent treatment for excessive sweating.
Most people return home the same day, but recovery can take several days. You may feel some discomfort, which you can treat with over-the-counter pain medicine such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. We recommend waiting at least two weeks before resuming normal activities.
